Little did I know I was part of a major cultural movement that would prove early predictions horribly wrong and suddenly make the world, along with the studios, pay attention to a new demographic with plenty of disposable income. It was the weekend right after Christmas, just before the sudden swell of the film's immense popularity, when the media and critics still expected box-office failure - in spite of the mostly positive reviews and the good word of mouth it had garnered. After reading so much about production troubles, the ever-increasing budget, and the release date being pushed from summer to the end of the year, I really didn't have much interest in seeing what I expected would be a complete disaster. In December 1997, like just about every guy in America, I was practically dragged by my significant other to see 'Titanic' in the theater. ![]()
